Forward Ellen White’s brace lifts the Lionesses over Japan, 2-0

Rachel Daly and England defeated Japan 2-0 this evening at Stade de Nice, earning their third victory of the tournament in Group D. The 2018 team MVP earned her first spot with the starting XI as a forward, playing all 90 minutes of the game.

Forward Ellen White gave the Lionesses an early lead in the first half when she found herself in a tight angle in the box with just the Japan goalkeeper to beat. White slotted the ball in with just enough pace to beat the Japan defender rushing back to try and clear it off the line.

Japan came close to the England goal, but couldn’t finish their chances. At the 84th minute, White doubled the Lionesses’ lead to secure the win that gave England the first place in the group stage of the tournament. England Carney squeezed a ball in between the two Japanese defenders and White raced into it, sliding the ball into the bottom corner of the goal at the first touch.

Daly and England (3-0-0) is set to play the round of 16 at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 23 at Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes. The opponent is to be determined.
