Recap: Houston Dash fall 1-0 to Chicago Red Stars

Chicago took the lead early in the first half after Chicago capitalized on a turnover outside the box. Dash defender Allysha Chapman attempted to clear a cross, but the ball fell to midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo who found Katie Johnson at the top of the penalty area. The Mexican international beat the Dash goalkeeper with a right-footed shot at the bottom corner of the far post.

The Dash threatened the Red Stars goal two minutes later when defender Clare Polkinghorne headed a ball above the crossbar on a free kick from Dash midfielder Sofia Huerta. Australian teammate and Dash forward Kyah Simon tested her luck in the 21st minute when she cut to her right foot and fired a shot from outside the box that was saved by Emily Boyd.

Houston continued to press, creating more opportunities in the final third. At the 31st minute, Chapman beat two Chicago defenders and dribbled the ball toward the left side of the goal, her cross was menacing – but eventually cleared by the Red Stars’ backline.

The Dash continued to attack with crosses from open play, tallying a total of 14 throughout the game. One of the most dangerous cross came from Huerta in the 41st minute when she found midfielder Haley Hanson inside the box, but the University of Nebraska product was denied at the near post by the Chicago goalkeeper.

The Dash kick off a cross-country road trip next week when they face the Washington Spirit at 6:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, July 20 at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Houston will then travel to the Pacific Northwest for a showdown with the Portland Thorns at 9:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, July 24 at Providence Park. Both matches will be streamed live on Yahoo! Sports.
