Playing yet another road game on turf in a hostile environment, the Dynamo took a 1-0 lead on the first Dynamo goal by Ade Akinbiyi. Houston gamely tried to hold the lead, with Brian Mullan playing through injury when the Dynamo ran out of substitutions, but former Dynamo Nate Jaqua tied the game in the 89th minute, and Stephen King netted the winner early in overtime. Tally Hall tied a club record with 10 saves in a sterling performance.
The Houston Dynamo were eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night after a 2-1 overtime loss to the Seattle Sounders at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. The Sounders advance to the championship game against D.C. United September 2.
The Dynamo took a 1-0 lead on a 32nd minute goal from Ade Akinbiyi. After a long ball was headed around the top of the penalty area, Akinbiyi controlled it and fired by Kasey Keller from close range for his first goal as a member of the Dynamo.
In a physical, hotly-contested game, the Sounders carried play throughout the second half and were denied by the outstanding efforts of Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall, a Gig Harbor, Wash. native, and several blocks by Dynamo defenders, including Brad Davis and Bobby Boswell.
Seattle finally broke through to tie the game in the 89th minute when former Dynamo player Nate Jaqua cashed in on a penalty-area lay-off from Sebastien Le Toux, tying the match.
The Sounders got the go-ahead goal four minutes into overtime when Stephen King was the first to a loose ball in the penalty area, slamming it by Hall before he could react.
Seattle finished the game with 10 men after defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado was sent off in the 110th minute, but the Dynamo could not tie the game.
Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall finished with 10 saves, tying a Dynamo single-game record set by Pat Onstad last year.
Houston midfielder Brian Mullan, a second-half substitute, was injured late in regulation but stayed in to play the entire overtime at forward despite limping.
The Dynamo are now 0-2 all-time in Open Cup semifinals; they lost 3-1 to the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2006. Seattle had been eliminated in the semifinals in each of the last two years as a minor league club, falling in overtime to FC Dallas in 2007 and in penalty kicks to the Charleston Battery in 2008.
Houston finished 3-3-1 on its stretch of seven consecutive road games, which consisted of four MLS games and three Open Cup games. The Dynamo will return home for a Saturday game against the New England Revolution, their first home game since June 20.
Houston was without forwards Brian Ching (U.S. national team) and Cam Weaver (groin strain), midfielder Stuart Holden (U.S. national team), and defenders Richard Mulrooney (knee surgery) and Eddie Robinson (knee surgery).
Midfielder Brad Davis appeared in his 115th career game for the Dynamo and made his 99th career Dynamo start.
