The Houston Dynamo saw their six-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Saturday night. Despite a goal from forward Romell Quioto in the 51st minute, the Dynamo were unable to rally from a two-goal halftime deficit.

Vancouver got on the board first when forward Fredy Montero converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute. The penalty was awarded by referee Drew Fischer when Dynamo midfielder Boniek García was whistled for a foul on Yordy Reyna just inside the area.

Reyna put the hosts up by two in the 32nd minute when he intercepted a deflected pass just outside the penalty area. The Peruvian turned and fired a curling shot into the upper right corner of the net, beyond the reach of Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric’s diving effort.

The Dynamo pulled a goal back early in the second when forward Mauro Manotas combined with Quioto for a nifty scoring move. Manotas gathered the ball 25 yards from goal and chipped a soft pass between two ‘Caps defenders. Quioto was first to the ball and put a toe to it, deftly flicking it past Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted for his fifth goal of the year.

The Dynamo pushed for an equalizer throughout the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net a second time. Houston’s most dangerous chance came in the 88th minute when Manotas worked free at the top of the area and unleashed a blast that screamed inches over the crossbar.

Minutes later, in stoppage time, midfielder Memo Rodriguez drew a foul atop the area in a dangerous position. Midfielder Tomás Martínez stepped up to take the kick, but his left-footed shot was stopped by the Vancouver wall before it could reach its target.

Quioto nearly opened his account in the 28th minute off of a free kick from 25 yards on the right side of the goal. He blasted a curling shot over the wall that caught ‘Caps goalkeeper David Ousted going the wrong way and forced a spectacular diving save.

The Dynamo will continue the 2017 season, presented by 76, on Wednesday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m. CDT against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. The match will be decide the winner of the season series and who retains possession of El Capitán, the Texas Revolutionary War-era cannon that goes to the series winner each year.
