The Houston Dynamo breezed to a 5-0 scrimmage victory over SMU Saturday morning at the Carl Lewis Track & Field Complex in Houston in front of an exclusive crowd of Dynamo season ticket holders. Rookie forward Will Bruin notched a natural hat trick in a 17-minute span in the first half, and Brad Davis contributed one goal and two assists in the win.

Houston improved to 6-0-3 in preseason play, including a 2-0 record against college opposition. The Dynamo will play San Jacinto Junior College Monday at 11 a.m. before wrapping up preseason play in the Atlanta Pro Soccer Challenge Friday and Sunday.

In Saturday’s scrimmage, rookie Will Bruin was active in the early going, firing high just 20 seconds after the opening whistle and hitting the outside of the post after just two minutes. Bruin then scored his first goals of the preseason, skying to head in Brad Davis corner kicks in the 15th and 30th minutes. Bruin added a third goal for the hat trick in the 31st minute when he headed in a Mike Chabala cross.

Houston made it 4-0 before halftime when Brad Davis, already with two assists to his name, bent a curling 30-yard free kick over the wall and into the net off the right-hand post.

The Dynamo changed their entire squad at halftime and needed four saves from goalkeeper Tyler Deric in the second stanza. Houston wrapped up the game in the 87th minute when Hunter Freeman swung in a perfect delivery from the right end line and found Jason Garey for a volleyed finish.

Houston played without forward Brian Ching and midfielders Colin Clark and Josue Soto due to injury. Midfielder Sergio Castillo, the Dynamo’s second-round pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft, joined the club for the first time while on break from Creighton University, where he intends to complete his degree. Castillo played the first 45 minutes of the match in a defensive midfield role.
