THE WIN:

  • Sent the Dynamo to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final for the first time in club history.
  • Was Houston’s first penalty kick shootout victory in the U.S. Open Cup and improved their shootout record in Open Cup play to 1-1.
  • Improved Houston’s record in penalty kick shootouts in all official competitions to 2-3 all-time.
  • Was Houston’s first win in a penalty kick shootout since the 2006 MLS Cup Final, when they won the shootout 4-3 over the New England Revolution.
  • Improved the Dynamo's all-time record in the U.S. Open Cup to 16-11-1.
  • Gave Houston a 1-0-0 mark against Los Angeles FC in the Open Cup.
  • Was Houston's first-ever win against Los Angeles FC after the two clubs played to a 2-2 draw in their first meeting, a league match on July 3.


TEAM NOTES:

  • The Dynamo improved to 2-4-0 in Open Cup matches that have gone to added extra time. They improved to 2-0-0 under head coach Wilmer Cabrera in matches that go beyond 90 minutes.
  • The Dynamo conceded the opening goal of the game when Los Angeles FW Diego Rossi scored in the sixth minute. It was the second time in Open Cup play that Houston allowed the opening goal. They also conceded first in the Quarterfinal vs. Sporting Kansas City on July 18.
  • The Dynamo have now scored two or more goals in three of their four Open Cup matches this year and have scored at least two goals in 10 of their 16 home games this year in all competitions.
  • The Dynamo led at halftime for the first time in this year’s Open Cup tournament. They are 4-1-1 in regular-season play when leading at intermission this year.
  • The Dynamo utilized their fourth different starting lineup in four Open Cup matches this year. Including all competitions, head coach Wilmer Cabrera has gone with 26 different lineups in 26 games this year.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES:

  • GK Joe Willis saved two penalty kicks in the shootout to help secure the win for Houston.
  • Willis earned his 11th career win in Open Cup play and improved his career record in the tournament to 11-3.
  • Willis advanced to his second career Open Cup Final. He previously made it to the Final, and won, with D.C. United in 2008.
  • Willis made his 14th start in the U.S. Open Cup and his ninth Open Cup start with the Dynamo. Willis is now second on the club’s all-time Open Cup appearance list.
  • FW Mauro Manotas scored his club-record fourth goal of this year’s Open Cup tournament when he found the net in the 25th minute. The goal extended his club record for career Open Cup scoring, giving him eight in the tournament since 2015.
  • The goal gave Manotas scoring strikes in back-to-back Open Cup matches for the second time in his career. He also did so in 2016, scoring once in the Fourth Round and twice in the Round of 16.
  • Manotas made his seventh start in the U.S. Open Cup, which will tie the club career record. He became the fourth Dynamo player to start seven Open Cup matches.
  • DF Andrew Wenger registered his first goal of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup and the second of his Open Cup career with the Dynamo when he redirected a corner kick into the net in the 12th minute. It was Wenger’s fourth career goal in Open Cup play.
  • Wenger started in his fifth U.S. Open Cup game for Houston and made his 15th appearance and 14th start of the 2018 season across all competitions.
  • Wenger advanced to his third career Open Cup Final. He played in the Final with Philadelphia in 2014 and 2015.
  • MF Memo Rodriguez scored his third goal of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup when he hit the back of the net with a right-footed shot in the 75th minute. It was his fourth career goal in Open Cup play.
  • Rodriguez made his 18th appearance of the 2018 season across all competitions and his third in the U.S. Open Cup when he came on for FW Romell Quioto in the 71st minute. It was the eighth appearance of his career in Open Cup play.
  • DF Adam Lundkvist recorded his first assist in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when his corner kick was put into the net by DF Andrew Wenger in the 12th minute.
  • Lundkvist will be making his second U.S. Open Cup start and his eighth start of the 2018 season across all competitions.
  • FW Alberth Elis registered his first career assist in Open Cup play when his pass set up FW Mauro Manotas for a goal in the 25th minute.
  • Elis made his second start in the U.S. Open Cup and his third overall appearance in the tournament.
  • MF Tomás Martínez registered his first assist in U.S. Open Cup play when he set up MF Memo Rodriguez for a goal in the 75th minute.
  • Martínez made his second start in the U.S. Open Cup and his third appearance in the tournament.
  • MF Darwin Cerén made his seventh start in the U.S. Open Cup and his 14th start of the 2018 season across all competitions.
  • MF Boniek García made his third career start in the U.S. Open Cup and sixth appearance in the tournament this evening.
  • DF Kevin Garcia made his sixth career U.S. Open Cup appearance, and his third of this year’s tournament, when he came on for DF Adam Lundkvist in the 88th minute.
  • MF Luis Gil made his 14th appearance for the Dynamo across all competitions and his third in the Open Cup when he came on for FW Mauro Manotas in the 84th minute. It was Gil’s 12th career appearance in the Open Cup.
  • Gil advanced to the Open Cup Final for the second time in his career. He previously made it to the final in 2013 with Real Salt Lake, but did not dress in that match.
  • DF Adolfo Machado made his second start in the U.S. Open Cup.
  • FW Romell Quioto saw action in his third career U.S. Open Cup game and made his second start in the tournament.
  • DF Philippe Senderos made his third start in the U.S. Open Cup and his fourth appearance in the tournament.
