Recap: Houston Dynamo 1, Real Salt Lake 1

The Houston Dynamo rallied for a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Forward Mauro Manotas scored in the 62nd minute to draw the home side level, and midfielder Boniek García saw an apparent match-winner overturned for offside in the 76th, leaving the game at 1-1.

Real Salt Lake struck first when midfielder Corey Baird slipped a pass through the Dynamo backline that found Albert Rusnák inside the box, and the midfielder gave the visitors the first goal of the game. The Slovakian international dribbled between two defenders to create space and tuck a shot inside the far post in the 40th minute.

Manotas equalized in the 62nd minute off a cross from defender Adam Lundkvist. The Colombian international used his right heel to strike the ball in midair for his first regular-season goal of the year. It was the third goal of the week for the forward, who scored twice in Houston’s 2-1 midweek victory over CD Guastatoya in the second leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Round of 16.

The visitors knocked on the door first when Baird’s first shot of the game shot skimmed over the crossbar after it deflected off a Dynamo defender inside the box in the 22nd minute.

Three minutes later, Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis saved Aaron Herrera’s effort from outside the box. The Dynamo netminder finished with four saves, including a pair of spectacular diving efforts.

García had the apparent game-winning goal in the 76th minute after he linked up with forward Alberth Elis at the near post. As the players and fans celebrated, referee Armando Villarreal put his finger to his ear, indicating that the play was under video review. After a brief delay, Villarreal raise his arm to indicate an offside call, overturning the goal.

Houston was forced to play with 10 men for the final nine minutes of the game after midfielder Matías Vera received his second yellow card of the game.

The Dynamo return to BBVA Compass Stadium on Tuesday evening to host Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL in the first leg of their Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinal tie. Tickets for Tuesday’s match are on sale now, starting at $28, at HoustonDynamo.com or by phone at 713-276-4625 (GOAL).
